In Jiujiang, the New Year awakens with the first delicate snowflake drifting down Mount Lushan. My home, just a kilometer from the mountain, has witnessed this enchanting transformation countless times. I would gaze upward as the lush, green forests gradually became draped in a gentle blanket of snow—a timeless sign that the New Year was drawing near.
This year feels different. In my first year working after graduation, I could only experience Lushan’s first snow through social media. Despite the digital barrier, the breathtaking images of a snow-capped Lushan stirred a deep nostalgia for the New Year celebrations at home.
The streets are alive with festive energy. Sidewalks are lined with stalls selling holiday essentials. Fruit vendors, perched in their modified Wuling Honggu vans, deftly weigh fruits for passersby. Plump tangerines burst with sweetness; crimson Fuji apples glisten, crisp and juicy; fragrant oranges tempt with their thin peels. Along the roads, benches arranged in squares display fireworks, handwritten couplets, and red lanterns. Despite the abundance, everything is orderly, creating a vibrant yet harmonious scene of celebration.

On New Year’s Day, temples on Lushan are enveloped in swirling incense smoke. At Donglin Temple, the morning bell reverberates through ancient walls, as if banishing misfortune and cleansing the world. Plainclothes devotees bow in solemn prayer, seeking blessings for their families, society, and the sacred land. Monks extend New Year’s blessings with serene, compassionate expressions. Here, faith and festivity converge, seamlessly blendin cherished traditions with a spirit of renewal.
The true flavor of the New Year is also found in food. In my hometown, families prepare a duck-like poultry called “tun”—smaller than a goose, tender, and braised in soy sauce. The dish is crafted by stir-frying chunks until golden and then simmering them with aromatic spices, soy sauce, and rice wine. As the enticing aroma fills the kitchen, anticipation builds. When served, the glistening, succulent tun encapsulates the warmth of home and the spirit of reunion.
Now, even as I work far from home and long for the enchanting snowscapes of Lushan, the spirit of the New Year remains indelibly etched in my memory. Despite the distance, the nostalgia and festive cheer continue to warm my heart. May the timeless beauty of my hometown endure, and may life flourish like the radiant New Year—growing ever brighter with each passing moment.
