In rural Ganzhou, every wedding or funeral transforms into a grand celebration that unites the entire village. The host family spares no expense—preparing fine wine and sumptuous delicacies, inviting relatives and friends to join in the festivities. I vividly remember my uncle's wedding 24 years ago, when, as a child, I watched in awe as adults busily shopped for and prepared ingredients for the banquet. Today, while societal progress and cultural reforms have simplified some of these elaborate customs, the enduring spirit of communal celebration remains.
In rural Ganzhou, once a new house is completed and decorated, the host family selects an auspicious date to host a grand celebration, known locally as the "Housewarming Feast." Preparation for the feast involves inviting respected elders, skilled in calligraphy, to craft the invitations, and local chefs, renowned for their culinary expertise, to design the menu. Once the invitations are ready, the host family personally delivers them to guests. The banquet manager and chefs then work together to finalize the menu based on the number of attendees, with the chef listing all required ingredients on red paper for the host to purchase in advance.
Two days before the banquet, the manager, calligrapher, and chefs arrive early at the host's home, followed by family helpers and neighbors, each assigned specific tasks. Together, they work tirelessly, visiting markets to select the freshest ingredients—killing chickens, butchering ducks, cleaning fish, washing vegetables, chopping ingredients, steaming rice, renting utensils, and setting up tables. Despite the fast pace, everyone wears genuine smiles, embodying the rare spirit of community and mutual support that is often lost in urban life. This warmth and simplicity touched me deeply, reflecting the authentic human connections that are at the heart of rural culture.
On the day of the banquet, guests arrive steadily, greeted warmly by villagers who guide them with smiles, helping them sign in, take their seats, and enjoy fragrant tea and snacks. The atmosphere is filled with lively conversations as guests share stories of their lives, joys, and challenges, filling the new house with laughter. Watching quietly, I was struck by the profound simplicity and genuine love for life that rural people embody. Unlike the formality and detachment often seen in urban socializing, their interactions exude natural warmth and authenticity.
The Hakka traditions of hospitality, ancestral reverence, and community harmony remain steadfast. Banquets continue to serve as vital connections for family and neighbors, reflecting a shared aspiration for a blessed life. Amid the busyness of modern life, these gatherings offer cherished opportunities to reconnect with loved ones. Rural banquets, featuring timeless dishes prepared in traditional styles, bring comfort to wanderers with their nostalgic flavors. While less extravagant than urban events, they are filled with heartfelt sincerity—rooted in the villagers' love for life and their dedication to preserving tradition.
