Automotive OBD Products and Application Scenarios

In today’s era of the Internet of Everything, intelligent connected vehicles are transforming how we drive and interact with technology. At the heart of this evolution is On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) — the vital system that bridges a vehicle’s operational data with the outside world. It plays a critical role in ensuring driving safety, real-time fault monitoring, and efficient vehicle maintenance.

The core of an automotive OBD system involves collecting real-time data through a network of onboard sensors, transmitting it to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for intelligent analysis and decision-making. The system then communicates with drivers through diagnostic codes, alerts, and indicators. Key functions include data acquisition, fault detection and storage, emissions monitoring, and wireless transmission of alerts and operational data.

To meet the demands of high-performance automotive OBD systems — particularly in the fast-growing new energy vehicle sector — Kinghelm has developed a comprehensive range of RF and connectivity solutions. Our product lineup includes:

  • BDS/GPS Dual-Mode Antennas

  • Wi-Fi Antennas

  • Bluetooth Antennas

  • RF Connectors

  • RJ45 Network Interfaces

Backed by over a decade of RF and microwave technology expertise, Kinghelm played a significant role in China’s Beidou “Two Passengers, One Hazardous Goods” project, supplying reliable BDS/GPS antennas, signal connectors, and terminals for certified Beidou-standard devices.

Today, Kinghelm continues to advance its RF product portfolio — offering solutions like BDS Beidou antennas, GPS antennas, Bluetooth antennas, WiFi antennas, and 4G antennas — while expanding into three key business areas:

  • Signal Connectivity Solutions: Including board-to-board, board-to-wire, sockets, terminals, and switches.

  • Custom Cable Assemblies: For automotive wiring harnesses, medical devices, and industrial applications.

  • High-Speed Connector Development & Custom Tooling

At Kinghelm, we deliver precise, reliable, and scalable solutions to support the future of intelligent vehicles and connected industries.

“Kinghelm — Connecting the World.”

Song Shiqiang from Kinghelm and Slkor introduced that on-board OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) can be applied to both passenger cars and commercial vehicles, representing a very large market capacity. The core function of OBD (On-Board Diagnostics System) is to achieve fault diagnosis, emission control, and performance optimization by real-time monitoring of the status of key vehicle components. The hardware of automotive OBD mainly consists of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), sensors, actuators, malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), and diagnostic tools. Internally, it also includes Kinghelm products like FPC connectors and network port terminals!

Mr. Song Shiqiang, General Manager of Kinghelm and Slkor, shared insights on the growing market for on-board OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) systems, which are now widely adopted in both passenger and commercial vehicles — representing a massive and fast-expanding global market.

At its core, the OBD system ensures real-time monitoring of critical vehicle components to deliver accurate fault diagnostics, emissions management, and performance optimization. Its essential hardware structure includes:

  • Electronic Control Unit (ECU)

  • Various Sensors

  • Actuators

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)

  • Diagnostic Tools

Supporting this system are precision components from Kinghelm, such as FPC connectors and network port terminals, playing a key role in ensuring stable signal transmission and secure connectivity within the vehicle’s electronic network.

As the automotive industry accelerates toward intelligent, connected, and eco-friendly transportation, reliable OBD hardware solutions like those from Kinghelm are becoming indispensable for manufacturers and system integrators worldwide.

Wireless Data Transmission in Automotive OBD Systems: How It Works

In modern vehicles, wireless communication for OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) typically relies on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi technologies to transmit real-time vehicle data to mobile devices or diagnostic terminals. Here’s how each method operates:

Bluetooth Transmission:

  1. Once powered on, the OBD device with Bluetooth capability enters pairing mode.

  2. The driver or technician uses a smartphone or tablet to locate and pair with the OBD device, establishing a secure Bluetooth link.

  3. The OBD module collects live data from the vehicle’s ECU — such as engine RPM, coolant temperature, and fault codes — packages it, and transmits it via Bluetooth according to an agreed protocol.

  4. The paired device receives the data, decodes it, and displays real-time diagnostic information through a mobile app for quick access and monitoring.

Wi-Fi Transmission:

  1. The OBD’s built-in Wi-Fi module creates a local Wi-Fi hotspot. The user connects their mobile device to this hotspot to establish a network link.

  2. Vehicle data is formatted according to networking protocols and transmitted via Wi-Fi to the connected terminal.

  3. The app on the device receives and processes the data, providing detailed vehicle diagnostics on-screen.

  4. Additionally, the user can send commands back to the OBD device — such as requesting specific parameters or configuring settings — achieving two-way, real-time data interaction.

Both solutions ensure seamless, wireless connectivity for monitoring and managing vehicle health, optimizing performance, and improving the driver experience.

According to Song Shiqiang, both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi transmission technologies offer distinct advantages in automotive OBD applications:

  • Bluetooth provides lower power consumption and simpler, quicker connections, though it typically operates within a range of up to 15 meters. The Bluetooth module pairs with a mobile app to deliver key functions such as remote vehicle control, key management, and device authentication, enhancing the user’s smart car experience with reliable, energy-efficient connectivity.

  • Wi-Fi transmission, on the other hand, delivers faster data speeds and a much greater communication range — up to 300 meters in optimal conditions. However, it requires more power and involves a slightly more complex setup. In terms of functionality, both transmission methods support similar core features.

These wireless communication modules are typically paired with onboard GPS/BDS Beidou navigation and positioning systems, unlocking extended capabilities like route history playback, geo-fencing alerts, and one-touch emergency shutdown functions — all contributing to safer, smarter, and more connected driving experiences.
