From Ocean Winds to Open Roads — A Motorcycle Travelogue in Koh Lan by Li Zezhong
Departing from Pattaya Pier by speedboat, we skimmed across the waves and, after about forty minutes, arrived at the crystal-clear shores of Koh Lan, a tropical gem nestled in the Gulf of Thailand. With the noise of the city left far behind, we rented motorcycles and set off on a spontaneous island loop—embracing the freedom of the open road, sea breezes, and the promise of hidden beaches waiting around every turn.
Starting the engines and cruising along the coastline felt like the ultimate way to experience Koh Lan. The roads are narrow yet winding, rolling gently between mountains and sea. On one side, lush tropical forests sway with coconut palms; on the other, the endless azure waters of the Gulf of Thailand stretch to the horizon, shifting from light blue to deep sapphire like layers of crystal-clear jelly shimmering under the sun. The sea breeze brushes against your face, carrying a fresh salty scent that sweeps away heat and worries, leaving only freedom and exhilaration.
We rode at our own pace, stopping wherever the view invited us. Our first stop was Tawaen Beach, lively and colorful with its long stretch of fine white sand, warm and soft underfoot. Bright umbrellas dotted the shoreline, while jet skis, banana boats, and parasailing painted a vibrant coastal scene. Snorkeling revealed a charming underwater world—tropical fish gliding nearby and coral formations resting quietly beneath the surface—like stepping into a romantic sea adventure without traveling far offshore.
Continuing the ride, we left the crowds behind and discovered the quieter beauty of Samae Beach. Here, the atmosphere felt calmer and more relaxed, with crystal-clear water and clean, powdery sand—perfect for unwinding. We stopped at a small beachfront café, ordered fresh Thai seafood, a fragrant bowl of Tom Yum, and chilled drinks. Enjoying tropical flavors while gazing at the endless ocean felt like a feast for both the palate and the eyes, as time seemed to slow to a gentle rhythm.
As we rode, the landscape kept unfolding in new ways. We passed through peaceful fishing villages and met welcoming locals, whose warm "Sawasdee ka" instantly made us feel at home. At one point, we climbed to a scenic viewpoint, parked our bikes, and gazed over the entire Koh Lan, surrounded by the endless blue sea. Golden beaches stretched like ribbons along the shoreline, and houses dotted the lush greenery where sea met sky. Standing in the breeze, taking in this expansive panorama, I felt a deep sense of calm and liberation.
Sunset brought the most magical moments of our motorcycle journey. The sky was painted in soft shades of orange and gold, reflecting on the water like scattered light. We rode slowly back along the coastline, the evening breeze and setting sun accompanying us. Gentle waves lapped the shore, and though darkness gradually fell, the island’s beauty remained mesmerizing—every moment felt like it could last forever.
This motorcycle adventure around Koh Lan was unhurried—no packed schedules, no posed photo stops—just the freedom to ride, pause, and explore at our own pace. It reminded me that the true magic of travel lies not in the destination, but in the journey itself: the wind on your face, the golden sunset, the turquoise sea, the soft white sand, and the pure joy of riding. These moments became the most treasured memories of the trip.
Koh Lan may be a small island, but its pristine coastal beauty has the power to rejuvenate anyone who visits. This serene blue paradise in the Gulf of Thailand, paired with the freedom of a self-driven motorcycle adventure, will forever hold a special place in my heart.
