Chen Ling at Kinghelm: How Family Traditions Create a Symphony of New Year Joy

The 26th day of the twelfth lunar month is considered an auspicious day to move into a new home. Choosing this date honors the tradition of “bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new”—sweeping away a year’s dust and embracing the New Year in a fresh space.

My mother prepared traditional items: a zengzi (a steaming utensil from our hometown), firewood, rice, oil, and salt. We also brought pots and bowls, apples, dragon fruit, a ladder, and fire.

At midnight, as the clock struck twelve, my father stepped into the new house carrying a blazing flame, proclaiming that life would flourish with prosperity. My mother followed, holding rice, gold ingots, and red envelopes, wishing, “May wealth roll in.”

Behind them came elders, siblings, and relatives, each carrying offerings and blessings. Some said, “Step by step to success,” others, “Peace and safety,” “Abundant wealth,” or “May everything go as you wish.”

The elders’ faces beamed like warm winter sunshine, radiating joy and comfort. The younger ones chirped excitedly like cheerful birds, infusing the scene with energy. Everyone entered carefully, placing their items, each gesture filled with hopes for a better life.

Inside, laughter echoed continuously. Outside, fireworks painted the night sky—some streaked like shooting stars, others bloomed like flowers—turning the heavens into a dreamlike canvas. Illuminated by lights and firework sparks, the family’s smiling faces glowed warmly. Sitting together, sharing the excitement of moving and the hopes of a New Year, our laughter wove a heartwarming symphony of festive spirit.

A New Year, A New Home!

On the first night in our new home, I lay quietly in bed. Under the soft yellow glow of the light, I watched my child sleeping peacefully, and my heart overflowed with happiness. I remembered the ancient saying, “moving to a better place like birds to a valley,” and imagined it as “swallows returning to celebrate”—their homecoming perfectly in tune with the arrival of spring.

Soon, dawn arrived. Sunlight streamed gently through the window, spreading warmth across the floor. The children laughed and played in the new house, and I felt a deep sense of peace and comfort, as if all the fatigue of the past year had melted away.

Bright Windows, A Fresh Start of Happiness

On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I cooked together, preparing a feast of fish, chicken, and beef. Seeing the table filled with delicious dishes and watching the whole family enjoy them with smiles, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment and warmth.

When Family Is Together, Every Bite Tastes Like Home

That evening, as we stayed up to welcome the New Year, the children gathered to play games while the adults sat together, sharing stories of the past year and hopes for the next. My mother, knowing how tired I was from cooking, thoughtfully prepared late-night snacks and helped look after the children.

In this warm, lively atmosphere, I truly felt that home is where your heart always returns, no matter how far you go.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, sunlight poured in, bright and cheerful, as if celebrating the new year along with our new home. We woke early, dressed in new clothes, and paid visits to our elders. Their smiles and red envelopes carried wishes for a smooth, healthy year ahead. The children, thrilled with their gifts, ran through the house laughing.

Later, we visited the park, glowing with festive lights and alive with laughter. Everyone’s joyful faces mirrored the season’s happiness. We strolled along the paths, soaking in the sights and energy, and at noon, stopped at a nearby restaurant to enjoy a meal together, talking about our plans and dreams for the year ahead. In those moments of shared warmth and laughter, I felt deeply that life is beautiful—and that our new home marks the beginning of a truly happy chapter.
