Walking the Mortal World: How Zhuang Chunna Lets Faith Light the Way
The alleys of my hometown are narrow and winding. On the afternoon of the 29th day of the twelfth lunar month, I walked with my mother to the ancestral temple for the annual worship. The rural paths were uneven, the air rich with the aroma of braised goose and the faint burn of gold paper. My mother carried a bamboo basket, meticulously packed with offerings, moving at her steady, unhurried pace—the same ritual she has followed every New Year for over fifty years.
The temple was already bustling with people. Candlelight flickered, casting a warm glow on the deity’s majestic statue. Tall incense sticks were lit, offerings arranged neatly, voices rose and fell in soft chatter, and gold paper turned to ash, curling into the air like dark butterflies. I noticed Auntie next door kneeling for a long time, eyes closed, lips moving slightly, as if quietly sharing the year’s thoughts with the deities. In that moment, I realized: for Teochew people, worship isn’t about asking for favors—it’s about confiding. It’s handing over exhaustion, grievances, and hopes that cannot be spoken aloud, entrusting them to a wisp of blue smoke and the unseen compassion of the divine.
Interior of the Ancestral Temple
It’s much like what builds long-term client relationships—often, it’s not the price, but that “invisible something.” I remember a client who, during our initial discussions, pushed the price down to almost zero profit. At that point, I didn’t rush to argue. Instead, I sent a simple weekly WeChat update: what tests we had completed, which models had been fine-tuned, or if there were new products he might want to try. Over time, he realized I never misled him—the models I recommended genuinely helped him cut BOM costs, and the parameters were accurate. Gradually, trust grew.
This kind of trust is like incense burned in worship—unseen and intangible, yet slowly accumulating, quietly strengthening the bond.
Teochew people believe in deities, but what they truly honor is an invisible order. The divine exists in the clouds, yet also in the human heart; it is both causality and destiny. Isn’t this the same creed we follow in sales? Every time we honestly share parameters, every time we proactively resolve after-sales issues, every time we say, “Let me find a way” when a client is anxious—it’s like adding a stick of sincere incense to our own “incense burner.” Burn it long enough, and a response naturally comes—not a divine miracle, but the response of human hearts.
In business, the rule is simple: “Without trust, a person cannot stand,” and “If a deal doesn’t happen, goodwill remains.” Worshiping deities transforms this trust and integrity into a tangible ritual, carried across generations through smoke and flame. And those of us who grew up in these old alleys bring that same reverence into office buildings, into every quotation, every client visit, every contract. The deities are not on the shrine—they live in the hearts of every client who chooses to trust you.
Perhaps this is the essence of Teochew faith: to work diligently in the visible world while planting good karma in the invisible one. Every order and transaction is simply the natural blossoming of flowers within this web of cause and effect.
